HPE GreenLake for SAP S/4HANA

Complete and fully scalable architecture for SAP

The migration of SAP ERP to SAP S/4HANA is a good time to rethink the strategy of maintaining the system in the context of its technical infrastructure. Platform performance, reliability, and security are boundary conditions. It is also important to know how much and what we pay for, and to be flexible in following changing needs. For enterprises that have a cloud strategy for SAP, but want to maintain full control of their environment, HPE offers the SAP S/4HANA private cloud supported by HPE GreenLake. The combination of HPE infrastructure with the qualifications and experience of All for One Poland consultants is the way to obtain a complete and fully scalable architecture for SAP.

Today, SAP customers have more options to implement their SAP environment than ever before, including migration to the public cloud.

However, if the SAP ERP system is at the heart of the enterprise, this perspective may raise questions. Many businesses see cloud benefits such as consumption-based billing, flexible scalability, and managed services, but there are also widespread concerns about a data storage location, unplanned downtime, data protection, migration and integration with the public cloud.

Enterprises planning to migrate to SAP S/4HANA before the end of support for legacy SAP software in 2027 need a way to ensure they maintain the performance, reliability and security of the mission-critical platform they need to have full control over, while gaining the advantages and benefits of the cloud.

The popularity of the HPE GreenLake platform gives HPE a leading position in private and hybrid cloud solutions. According to the IDC Cloud Pulse Survey 3Q22, HPE GreenLake is the most well-known “edge-to-cloud” platform, with more than 1,600 deployments worldwide.

All for One Poland, together with Hewlett Packard Enterprise infrastructure, has unique skills and experience supported by specific implementations and can serve as a potential solution partner when starting or continuing migration to SAP S/4HANA.

Choose a proven migration path with an expert partner

When planning changes in the SAP environment, you should always consider in the background the necessary infrastructure that can be delivered in different models.

Depending on our strategy or preferences, some scenarios/solutions require only a political decision, while others require greater competences and infrastructure. As a result, it will be necessary to select appropriate substantive competences for the selected model of providing an infrastructure solution to make sure that the solution installation and maintenance project is carried out properly.

It is therefore worth considering especially those solutions that will provide a complete infrastructure for the SAP environment – and if we are interested – also for other IT systems.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise solutions meet a wide range of needs, with a focus on infrastructure for SAP S/4HANA. First of all, these are:

From the simplest servers to servers dedicated for critical business applications (up to 16 high-performance processors and 32 TB RAM based on the latest mission-critical HPE Compute Scale-up Server 3200 servers);

Many models to meet the expectations of customers, from HPE MSA Gen6 to HPE Alletra 9000 / HPE XP, which can work in active-active mode between two processing centers, based only on NVMe disks; arrays can work depending on the model in block or file mode;

Providing a central data storage infrastructure that can be accessed by multiple servers; this network features high bandwidth and availability, as well as easy management based on the Brocade standard;

LAN switches and other network devices, available under the HPE Aruba brand, which provide high performance, high availability and security for data transmission in server rooms and user networks;

Based on HPE StoreOnce and properly selected software allow you to efficiently implement the backup process and test recovery; using HPE GreenLake for Backup and Recovery architecture, you can, for example, back up your installation to the public cloud.

HPE solutions also include various types of software, such as:

Regardless of the selected servers and mission-critical arrays, HPE has unique software solutions for easy management of SAP system clusters; it is software derived from HP-UX servers, proven over the years and used in critical applications; it allows for more efficient switching of systems between data centers;

A tool for continuous data protection; one of its functionalities is always-on replication or journaling-based recovery;

A solution with many functionalities; in SAP environments, highly efficient and always available NFS Server is particularly useful (more on this later);

An operating system for SAP systems;

Enables virtualization of the entire environment;

A tool for managing digital business in a hybrid and multi-cloud environment

The above components, which can be used to build the entire IT environment, are just examples, and the selection of the right hardware and software must be preceded by an in-depth analysis of needs and forecasts for growth in the system life cycle perspective. A wide range of choices and proper customization of solutions is the key to building the right hardware and software platform for SAP systems.

Of course, when planning the infrastructure for the SAP environment, you should select components from the list of SAP-certified models so as to be able to build this infrastructure in accordance with SAP requirements for HANA Appliances or TDI (Tailored Datacenter Integration).

HPE customers benefit from HPE’s 30-year partnership with SAP and Intel. HPE solutions lead the way in terms of performance and scalability: HPE is the only provider of SAP-certified solutions based on Intel processors up to 32 TB and 16 sockets. As of June 2023, HPE ranks first in the benchmark results of SAP applications and certified hardware for SAP solutions in Microsoft Windows for 8, 12, 16 and 32 sockets.

How to choose an infrastructure that is tailored to your needs

As you navigate the HANA platform, the system infrastructure should meet a basic set of requirements, including application performance, volume of data and expected growth, uptime, desired level of integration with the current IT environment, and cost parameters in both short- and long-term perspectives.

These requirements will vary from company to company, but they will all be based on four common areas:

How do you plan to use the HANA platform initially? If you have already started the migration, how do you use the HANA platform now? Do you want to accelerate analytics with SAP BW/4HANA or get real-time analytics with SAP S/4HANA? In addition, will applications accessing the SAP HANA database (the application layer accessing the database layer) require a new system infrastructure?

What computational memory capacity will be needed based on current databases, projected growth, and whether you want to consolidate databases and eliminate silos?

How do you want to use SAP HANA? Do you want to run the HANA platform on-premises, off-site or in a hybrid cloud model?

Do you want your system infrastructure to be tailored to your environment and application needs, or do you prefer a pre-configured device? And since you will be implementing a new infrastructure for SAP HANA, do you want to modernize other areas of the IT environment, such as network components?

The answers to these questions will help you create the SAP HANA infrastructure that best meets your requirements.

It is worth mentioning that in the case of providing a complete infrastructure together with software under one contract, you gain a single point of contact (SPOC) in case of any problems at the junction of various components. This saves time and helps avoid potential “juggling" between manufacturers of individual components.

Proper selection of technologies and appropriate services is a very important element in the project of creating or replacing an infrastructure for SAP systems. But is it possible to optimize this process even further and pay only for a fixed or used part of this infrastructure, having the confidence that you can expand it, if needed, on predetermined terms? Moreover, if it turns out that you do not need the expansion, can you only pay for the part that you agreed on at the beginning?

This approach is the essence of the HPE GreenLake model.

It offers business transformation as a service with the same SAP software components as other RISE with SAP private offerings. The difference is that the data remains within its own infrastructure.

HPE GreenLake – the power of choice

Every SAP environment is unique. You can look for simplicity in the cloud, but you should not degrade your environment with an oversimplified solution. HPE GreenLake helps meet mission-critical needs while implementing strategy and delivering cloud benefits:

  • Migration of the environment, regardless of its complexity — including all customizations. Choose your own system integrator or managed service provider (for example All for One Poland);
  • Delivering on your sustainability goals — resources that are precisely tailored to your needs. Avoid over-allocation and reduce both energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions;
  • Enhanced HPE Complete Care support provides a single point of contact for the entire infrastructure environment;
  • SLAs – choose an architecture that fully automates high availability (HA) and disaster recovery (DR) solutions; optimized for SAP, with SLAs that guarantee the expected times;
  • Predictability of monthly bills — fixed monthly payments for a turnkey solution designed to meet long-term needs, including migration of the environment.

HPE GreenLake for SAP environment

The SAP S/4HANA private cloud powered by the HPE GreenLake platform is a complete, managed solution delivered to a customer-selected location. Customers can maintain the SAP application environment, infrastructure and data locally or in collocation. The infrastructure is built on proven, mission-critical HPE platforms, which are scalable, highly efficient and certified by SAP. These platforms provide an always-on infrastructure with SLAs that guarantee uptime of at least 99.99%.

At the same time, thanks to HPE GreenLake platform, customers benefit from an efficient, flexible and consistent cloud. Infrastructure can be run as a service and flexibly scaled using a storage buffer. It is possible to make monthly payments for a long-term solution. While costs in the public cloud can get out of control, HPE’s approach to the private cloud helps keep costs predictable throughout the useful life. There is no need to reserve cloud capacity or to make long-term commitments to get a lower price.

The solution is also aimed at simplifying the process of migration to SAP S/4HANA. Customers can quickly receive a turnkey solution offer, a work description and a price. Thanks to the expertise of All for One and HPE in the SAP area, the migration can be carried out efficiently and safely.

Choice of solution levels

With the SAP S/4HANA private cloud based on the HPE GreenLake platform, you can choose from three different service levels, depending on your needs.

Consumption-based infrastructure. By running a suitable, tailored HPE infrastructure, optimized for SAP, you pay only for its use (pay as you use). At the same time, you maintain full flexibility in performance planning and support as part of HPE maintenance services.

Managed Infrastructure as a service. All for One, together with Hewlett Packard Enterprise, provides a fully managed solution for running SAP applications based on SAP HANA or any supported database. The hardware infrastructure meets the stringent SAP certification requirements.

Optionally, you can include platform backup and recovery services to ensure that the target solution provides a managed infrastructure platform up to the level of the logical VMware ESXi hypervisor (VM as a service). All software components running on virtual machines (VMs), including operating systems, are managed by a client or All for One.

This level of solution offers:

  • SLA with 99.99% infrastructure availability;
  • provision of services for the system on a 24×7 basis;
  • continuity of service planning and ongoing supervision;
  • continuity of software release planning;
  • monitoring and managing the workload of virtual machines;
  • a flexible solution that allows you to adjust the scope of responsibilities.

Managed platform as a service, including SAP Basis. In addition to IaaS solutions, we offer individual services for the SAP environment based on SAP HANA or older databases. This makes it possible to obtain from All for One Poland a complete SAP operation in the field of SAP Technology (SAP Basis), including infrastructure. Included services cover all supported SAP databases and applications. All for One Poland manages the entire SAP environment, whether on physical or virtual machines, including operating systems.

Examples of additional options
