Microsoft Purview brings together in one place tools that previously operated separately: cataloging, information classification, Data Loss Prevention (DLP), data lifecycle management, and regulatory compliance oversight. The platform creates a consistent data security ecosystem across Microsoft 365 and Azure environments, while also supporting other public clouds and on-premise systems.

With the Data Catalog module, an organization can automatically scan data sources, identify sensitive ones, and build data maps. This provides a better understanding of where information is located, who has access to it, and how it is used. The Information Protection module, in turn, automatically classifies documents and messages, assigning them confidentiality labels and appropriate protection policies, such as encryption or sharing restrictions.

Data Loss Protection (DLP) features monitor the flow of information across the Microsoft 365 ecosystem – from emails to Teams – preventing accidental or intentional data leakage.

The eDiscovery tool enables quick search, analysis, and export of data for legal purposes, while the Audit function provides a detailed log of user and administrator activity, supporting security and regulatory compliance. This provides significant support for compliance and security departments in preparing audits and responding to incidents.

New to the Purview ecosystem is integration with Microsoft Copilot for Security – artificial intelligence that can analyze DLP policies, detect security vulnerabilities, and recommend corrective actions in natural language.
